In addition to performing clinical trials and manufacture of adult stem cells, basic research in the stem cell field is also conducted as we recognize the importance of basic research in cell therapy technology

Academic support for the enhancement of the quality of cell therapeutics and the execution of clinical trials are provided, and development of large-scale cell therapy culture methods are performed as basic research.

Especially with a focus on the immunomodulatory properties of adult stem cells, research is being performed with various objectives (biological interaction between adult stem cells and immune cells in inflammatory conditions, cell apoptosis/survival, adhesion and motility, cell aging, effects on immune system regulatory cytokines, gene expression profiling, metabolomics, cell growth using antioxidants, improvement of fibrosis within the corpus spongiosum, and regeneration of nerves) using cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry and immunological techniques and through co-operation with domestic and foreign investigators to broaden the stem cell landscape.

Graft-versus-Host Disease, GvHD

The immune system identifies self and non-self entities in the body and attacks the non-self entities to remove their biological function or the entity itself. Graft-versus-host disease(GVHD) is a complication of transplantation in which blood cells in the transplanted tissue recognizes the host's cells as non-self and attacks them. In severe cases, this condition may ultimately lead to death.

Immunosuppressants and corticosteroids are used to treat this condition. Unfortunately, there are patients who do not respond to corticosteroids, resulting in a clear need for the development of new treatment options.
At SCM Lifescience, we have established a mouse model for GVHD. Using mouse and human stem cells on our GVHD model, we have observed that mice which received stem cell therapy showed significantly better survival rates.
This finding shows that adult stem cells may be able to be used as a cell therapy option for GVHD.

Acute Pancreatitis, AP

The pancreas is a gland located next to the gallbladder and behind the stomach, and acute inflammation in the pancreas is called acute pancreatitis. In the United States, roughly 50,000 to 80,000 new patients are afflicted with this condition. The causes of this illness are usually alcohol consumption and cholelithiasis, while it can also be caused rarely by hyperkalemia, hyperlipidemia, drugs, bacterial infection, surgery, and pancreatography.
While most cases are treated without complications, 25% of patients suffer from severe complications and 9% die from this condition. There is no specific treatment option available for this condition.
Recently, we have established a mouse model of acute pancreatitis, and the injection of human stem cells showed a significant decrease in levels of inflammatory cytokines and the cell death of pancreatic cells showed a marked decrease as well. This finding shows that adult stem cells may be able to be used as a cell therapy option for acute pancreatitis.

Atopic Dermatitis, AD

Atopic dermatitis is one of the major chronic dermal conditions in patients with allergy and its representative symptoms are skin dryness and pruritus.
In the general population 0.5%-1% are afflicted with this condition and the percentage to 5%-10% for children.
The cause of this illness has not been completely elucidated yet, while genetic factors and immunological deficiencies have been implicated. Steroids as anti-inflammatory agents are used for treatment, however adverse events are frequent and symptoms tend to reoccur after discontinuation of steroids. Therefore, there is a pressing need for a therapeutic agent which can treat the cause of atopic dermatitis.
At SCM Lifescience, we have established a mouse model for atopic dermatitis. When stem cells are injected into this model, alleviation of atopic dermatitis has been observed and levels of IgE, the immunoglobulin involved with inflammation, showed a significant decrease. This finding shows that adult stem cells may be able to be used as a cell therapy option for atopic dermatitis.

Liver Cirrhosis

Liver cirrhosis is a disease in which hepatic fibrosis progresses due to long-term hepatocyte damage caused mainly by alcohol drinking and hepatitis virus. Currently, there is no standard treatment for moderate to severe cirrhosis, and only preventive treatment is the treatment of choice to prevent the deterioration of the disease. The liver transplantation is the only way to cure the liver cirrhosis.
Successful pre-clinical result and difficulty in liver transplantation require studies on new treatment on liver cirrhosis and clinical trials with mesenchymal stem cells are ongoing worldwide.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

The insulin secretion is absolutely insufficient because the beta cells that produce insulin in the pancreas are destroyed by various mechanism (autoimmune etc.)
Patients are predominantly in their 30s or early childhood, and the domestic incidence rate is gradually increasing.
Insulin injections should be given every day.
